ArtMill lies in the heart of Central Europe, in the Bohemian countryside, on a lake, in the Czech Republic. The school is surrounded by agricultural land, and rolling hills. American artist Barbara Benish, with her Czech husband, is slowly renovating an old Mill with it’s surrounding grounds, and opening it up for student workshops and camps during the spring and summer months. ArtMill provides programs for University Students, and High School groups with a variety of workshops and classes; Children ages 6–12, and Youth up to age 16, participate in a summer camp each July. A wide variety of classes are offered in Art, Music, Languages, and Dance, as well as Horseback riding, Swimming, and Hiking.
University Groups take part in a "Master's Program", wherein top Czech artists come to do intensive 1–2 week workshops with the students. Fresh food from the garden and fields give the students lunch each day, as well as providing first hand experience in Agriculture, Herbal Lore and Crafts, and Organic Cooking. As the Mill is “green”, we pass on this environmental awareness in every hour of the day at Červeny mlýn ("Red Mill", in English). All students have a chance to participate in a working farm, collecting eggs from the chickens or milking the goat, and interact with and draw the other animals that live there also: ponies, doves, dogs, cats and, of course, rabbits.
ArtMill se nachází na Červeném mlýně u Červeného rybníka, uprostřed šumavských lesů a polí, nedaleko od Nažlovských Hor. Barbara Benish, kalifornská umělkyně, společně se svým manželem renovují starý mlýn a přilehlá stavení, a už druhým rokem ho během letních měsíců otevírají pro nejmladší generaci. Letní tábor zahrnuje širokou škálu aktivit pro děti mezi šesti až dvanácti lety, a pro mládež do šestnácti let: kursy výtvarných technik, hudby, tance, jízdy na koni, plavání a výlety do přírody. Přesnídávky jsou doplněné čerstvými produkty ze zahrady a z polí. Děti hravým způsobem získávají povědomí i o zemědělství, bylinkářství, řemeslech a vaření z organických surovin. Červený mlýn je „zelený“ v tom, jak s dětmi v každém okamžiku neformálně rozvíjíme porozumění ekologickým souvislostem. Děti mají příležitost účastnit se některých prací na farmě, sbírání vajíček, dojení kozy a hraní si s dalšími zvířaty: ovcemi, poníky, holuby, králíky, psy a kočkami.
